What is Ketosis?

When the body needs energy to operate, and it runs low on it's first choice (Glucose), it turns into burning fat as it's second energy source. This process is known as Ketosis.

Here is a more technical definition: Ketosis is a metabolic state characterized by elevated levels of ketone bodies in the bloodstream and urine. These ketone bodies are produced by the liver as an alternative energy source when the body's primary fuel source, glucose (derived from carbohydrates), is in short supply.

The Ketosis Process

  1. Limited Glucose Availability: When dietary carbohydrate intake is significantly reduced or completely eliminated, the body's glycogen stores (stored glucose in the liver and muscles) become depleted.
  2. Glycolysis Reduction: As glycogen stores dwindle, the body's ability to produce glucose through a process called glycolysis also diminishes.

  5. Ketone Utilization: These ketone bodies are released into the bloodstream and can be utilized by various tissues, including the brain, heart, and skeletal muscle, for energy production.

Ketosis and Dieting

Ketosis is often associated with specific dietary approaches, particularly low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) diets like the Ketogenic Diet. These diets aim to restrict carbohydrate intake to such an extent that the body readily enters a ketogenic state and burns fat.
